Essentiale + entecavir

Essentiale + entecavir is a combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in patients with concurrent hepatic steatosis (fatty liver). Entecavir is a potent nucleoside analogue that inhibits the hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase, thereby blocking viral replication. Essentiale, which contains essential phospholipids (primarily polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine), is used as a hepatoprotective agent to support liver cell membrane integrity and improve metabolic liver damage. This combination is the subject of a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT01148576) led by Zhejiang University to evaluate whether the addition of Essentiale can improve the antiviral efficacy of entecavir, which has been shown to be reduced in patients with significant hepatic steatosis.
