Overview
Estrogel Pro is a combination menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) regimen consisting of transdermal estradiol gel (Estrogel) and oral micronized progesterone (Prometrium). In the context of the EMPOWER trial led by Deakin University, this combination is being evaluated for its efficacy in treating subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS) in postmenopausal women. The treatment rationale is based on the hypothesis that estrogen deficiency post-menopause contributes to tendon degeneration and musculoskeletal pain; replacing these hormones, in conjunction with standardized physiotherapy, is intended to improve shoulder function and reduce pain. Estradiol acts as a potent agonist at estrogen receptors to provide systemic replacement, while progesterone is co-administered primarily to provide endometrial protection and potentially modulate connective tissue health.
