Overview
This perimenstrual hormone stabilization intervention is an experimental combination therapy being developed by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to treat suicidal ideation in females. The treatment consists of a transdermal estradiol patch (0.1 mg/24 hrs) and oral micronized progesterone (200 mg/day) administered for two weeks starting seven days after ovulation. The mechanism of action involves stabilizing ovarian hormone levels to prevent the acute perimenstrual withdrawal of estradiol and progesterone, which has been linked to increased suicide risk, hopelessness, and hyperarousal in sensitive individuals. This approach is currently being evaluated in the CLEAR-3 (Hormone Stabilization for Proximal Suicide Risk) clinical trial to determine if preventing hormone drops can mitigate proximal suicide risk in reproductive-age females.
