Overview

Estrogen + progestin refers to a combination of two female sex hormones used in various pharmaceutical products, primarily for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and as combined oral contraceptives. In HRT, this combination is prescribed to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Estrogen works by replacing the hormone that is no longer produced after menopause, alleviating vasomotor and genitourinary symptoms. Progestin is added to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia or cancer associated with unopposed estrogen therapy in women with an intact uterus[1][3][7]. In contraceptive use, estrogen + progestin suppresses ovulation and alters cervical mucus to prevent pregnancy[2]. The mechanism involves agonism at estrogen receptors (for estrogen) and progesterone receptors (for progestin), modulating gene expression related to reproductive tissues.
