Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Etanercept + methotrexate is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. Etanercept is a biologic fusion protein that acts as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker by binding specifically to TNF and inhibiting its activity, thereby reducing inflammation and immune-mediated tissue damage[1][4][5]. Methotrexate is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) that inhibits enzymes involved in nucleotide synthesis, leading to anti-inflammatory effects by preventing cell division in rapidly proliferating cells such as those involved in the immune response[6]. The combination of these two drugs provides enhanced efficacy compared to either agent alone for many patients with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions[4].
