Overview

This investigational sequential combination therapy is being developed by Nova Southeastern University's Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine to treat Gulf War Illness (GWI). The treatment protocol is designed to 'reset' dysregulated homeostatic networks by first administering etanercept, a biologic TNF-alpha inhibitor, to reduce systemic inflammation, followed by mifepristone, a small molecule glucocorticoid receptor antagonist. The strategy aims to break the cycle of chronic neuro-immune dysfunction by lowering inflammatory signaling and then temporarily blocking stress hormone receptors to normalize the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials specifically for male veterans with GWI.
