Ethanol + sodium citrate is a combination of two agents, typically formulated as a catheter lock solution for hemodialysis catheters. Ethanol acts as an antimicrobial agent, disrupting microbial cell membranes and denaturing proteins, while sodium citrate (often in the form of trisodium citrate) functions primarily as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions necessary for blood clotting. This combination has been studied for its compatibility and efficacy in preventing catheter-related infections and thrombosis. In vitro studies have shown that up to 30% ethanol is compatible with 4% trisodium citrate without precipitation or loss of activity[9]. The mixture is not widely approved or marketed under specific brand names but may be used experimentally or off-label in clinical settings.
