Overview

Ethanolamine oleate + iopamidol (EOI) is a combination vascular sclerosant and embolic agent used in interventional radiology, specifically for balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO). It consists of 5% ethanolamine oleate, a fatty acid derivative that acts as a sclerosing agent by causing endothelial damage and subsequent thrombosis, mixed with iopamidol, an iodinated contrast medium that allows for fluoroscopic visualization during the procedure. An investigational foam formulation, created by mixing EOI with carbon dioxide, is being evaluated for its potential to improve efficacy and safety in treating portal hypertension and portosystemic shunts, such as gastric varices and splenorenal shunts. The development is primarily associated with Chiba University Hospital.
