Overview
ethinyl estradiol + desogestrel is a combination oral contraceptive containing two hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and desogestrel (a progestin). It is used to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), thickening cervical mucus to block sperm entry into the uterus, and altering the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. This medication does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. It is available only with a prescription and comes in various dosing regimens including monophasic (one phase), biphasic (two phases), and triphasic (three phases) packs[1][2][3].
