Overview
Welestra is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) marketed by Adorshea Bioceutics. It contains a combination of two small molecule hormones: ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and desogestrel, a third-generation progestin. The drug functions by suppressing the secretion of gonadotropins (follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone), which inhibits ovulation. It also induces changes in the cervical mucus to impede sperm migration and alters the endometrium to reduce the probability of implantation. Welestra is available in different formulations, such as Welestra 20 and Welestra 30, which typically denote the dosage of ethinyl estradiol (20 mcg and 30 mcg, respectively) combined with 150 mcg of desogestrel.
