Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination therapy consists of a combined oral contraceptive (containing the synthetic estrogen **ethinyl estradiol** and the progestin **drospirenone**) and **Vitamin D** (cholecalciferol) supplementation. It was investigated by **Wright State University** in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02865187) to evaluate its efficacy in improving sexual function in women with **polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)**. Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone work together to suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, thereby reducing ovarian androgen production and alleviating symptoms like hirsutism and acne. Drospirenone also acts as a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, which can help reduce water retention. Vitamin D is included to address the high prevalence of deficiency in the PCOS population, which is linked to metabolic and reproductive dysfunction. The study specifically aimed to measure improvements in sexual function using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI).
