Overview
ethinylestradiol + cyproterone acetate is a combined oral contraceptive pill frequently used in the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It consists of ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and cyproterone acetate, a synthetic progestogen with potent anti-androgenic activity. The combination works by suppressing the secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, thereby inhibiting ovarian androgen production, while the cyproterone component directly blocks androgen receptors in target tissues. This dual action effectively treats clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism, such as acne and hirsutism, and regulates menstrual cycles in women with PCOS. Chongqing Medical University has conducted comparative clinical trials evaluating its efficacy against metformin regarding insulin sensitivity and ovulation.
