Overview

Brunelle is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol and the fourth-generation progestin drospirenone. Marketed by FA.PA.SA (part of the Adium group) in Latin American regions such as Paraguay, it is primarily used for the prevention of pregnancy. The medication works by suppressing the release of gonadotropins (FSH and LH), which inhibits ovulation, while also altering cervical mucus and the endometrium to prevent fertilization and implantation. Drospirenone is unique among synthetic progestins for its anti-mineralocorticoid and anti-androgenic properties, which can help reduce estrogen-related water retention and treat androgen-dependent conditions like moderate acne vulgaris and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
