Overview

Akizza is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill containing the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol and the third-generation progestin gestodene. It is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy (oral contraception). The contraceptive effect of Akizza is achieved through multiple mechanisms, primarily the inhibition of ovulation by suppressing the mid-cycle gonadotropin surge, thickening of the cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and altering the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Originally developed by Morningside Healthcare, Akizza became part of the Aspire Pharma portfolio following Aspire's acquisition of Morningside in October 2022.
