Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Ethinylestradiol + levonorgestrel** is a fixed-dose combined hormonal contraceptive comprising ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin. It is available in multiple product-specific strengths, cyclic and extended-cycle oral regimens, and as a transdermal system. The principal contraceptive effect is suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary gonadotropin signaling and inhibition of ovulation; progestin-related cervical-mucus thickening and endometrial changes further reduce the likelihood of fertilization and implantation. Products containing this exact active-ingredient pair are approved for prevention of pregnancy, while clinical studies have also evaluated particular formulations for dysmenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis-related symptoms, menstrual migraine, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and other reproductive-endocrine settings.
