ethinylestradiol + levonorgestrel (Bayer)

MonoStep is a monophasic combined oral contraceptive developed by Jenapharm (a subsidiary of Bayer). It is a fixed-dose combination of the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol (30 mcg) and the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel (125 mcg). MonoStep prevents pregnancy primarily by suppressing ovulation through the inhibition of gonadotropin secretion from the pituitary gland. Additionally, it thickens cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration and alters the endometrium to prevent implantation. It is administered orally on a 21-day active pill cycle followed by a 7-day pill-free interval.
