Ethiodized oil + A54 peptide is an experimental targeted drug delivery and chemoembolic system developed by researchers at Bishan District People's Hospital for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The formulation consists of ethiodized oil (commonly known by the brand name Lipiodol), which serves as a radio-opaque contrast agent and embolic material, conjugated with the A54 targeting peptide (sequence: AGKGTPSLETTP). The A54 peptide was identified via phage display for its high affinity and specificity for HCC cell surfaces. By functionalizing the ethiodized oil with this peptide, the delivery system achieves superior accumulation within tumor tissues compared to conventional Lipiodol. This targeted approach is designed for use in transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) to enhance the localization of therapeutic agents, improve diagnostic imaging of small lesions, and increase the precision of vascular occlusion within the tumor, thereby potentially improving clinical outcomes and reducing systemic side effects in HCC patients.
