Overview

A combination of etidronic acid (also known as 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid or HEBP) and sodium hypochlorite is used as an irrigant in endodontic (root canal) procedures. Etidronic acid acts as a chelating agent that can be mixed with sodium hypochlorite without compromising its antimicrobial properties or chlorine availability for at least one hour. This mixture provides both tissue dissolution and smear layer removal during root canal cleaning. The combination has demonstrated synergistic effects in enhancing antimicrobial efficacy against biofilms such as Enterococcus faecalis and improving bacterial reduction compared to either agent alone. It is considered less aggressive than traditional chelators like EDTA and can be safely used during the entire instrumentation process[2][5][6][8]. The product "Dual Rinse HEDP" is a commercial formulation where the two agents are combined immediately before use.
