Overview

Etomidate + esketamine is an investigational anesthetic combination being studied for the management of postoperative pain, particularly in pediatric patients undergoing elective tonsillectomy. Etomidate is a carboxylated imidazole derivative that acts as a short-acting intravenous anesthetic induction agent by enhancing the activity of GABA-A receptors. Esketamine, the S(+)-enantiomer of ketamine, is a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that provides both anesthetic and potent analgesic properties. This combination is being evaluated by Anqing Municipal Hospital to determine if it provides superior postoperative pain relief and a more favorable safety profile compared to traditional opioid-based induction regimens, such as etomidate combined with fentanyl.
