Overview

Etomidate + thiopental is a combination of two intravenous anesthetic agents used for the induction of general anesthesia. Etomidate is an imidazole derivative that acts as a non-barbiturate hypnotic agent, while thiopental is a barbiturate with ultrashort-acting central nervous system depressant properties. Both drugs induce hypnosis rapidly but have no analgesic activity. The rationale for combining these agents includes potentially reducing adverse effects associated with each drug when used alone, such as minimizing pain on injection and abnormal movements (with higher ratios of thiopental to etomidate), and improving hemodynamic stability during anesthesia induction[1][5]. This combination may be considered in clinical settings where balanced anesthesia or specific patient comorbidities require tailored pharmacologic approaches.
