Overview

Etonogestrel + ethinyl estradiol is a combination hormonal contraceptive delivered via a flexible vaginal ring. It contains two active ingredients: etonogestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). The ring is inserted into the vagina, where it continuously releases hormones over three weeks to prevent pregnancy. Its primary mechanism of action is suppression of ovulation by inhibiting gonadotropin secretion from the pituitary gland. Additional contraceptive effects include thickening cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. This combination is indicated for birth control in women of reproductive age and was first approved in 2001[1][5][6][9].
