etonogestrel + levonorgestrel

Etonogestrel + levonorgestrel is a hypothetical combination of two synthetic progestogens, both widely used in hormonal contraception. Etonogestrel is a third-generation progestogen found in contraceptive implants (such as Nexplanon) and vaginal rings, while levonorgestrel is used in various forms including oral pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and emergency contraception. Both agents primarily act by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Etonogestrel has weaker androgenic properties compared to levonorgestrel[6][7]. Levonorgestrel can also be used for emergency contraception within 5 days after unprotected intercourse[3][7]. There are currently no marketed products or clinical evidence supporting the use of these two agents together in a single formulation.
