Overview

Euphrasia + cyclosporin is an experimental combination therapy investigated by the University of Missouri-Columbia for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). This regimen combines a homeopathic ophthalmic solution derived from the plant *Euphrasia officinalis* (commonly known as Eyebright) with cyclosporin, a well-established immunosuppressant. Cyclosporin acts as a calcineurin inhibitor, blocking the activation of T-lymphocytes and the subsequent production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-2 (IL-2). By reducing chronic inflammation of the ocular surface and lacrimal glands, cyclosporin helps restore natural tear production. Euphrasia is traditionally used in homeopathic medicine for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties to relieve eye irritation. The combination is studied to determine if the addition of homeopathic Euphrasia provides synergistic clinical benefits over cyclosporin monotherapy in improving tear film stability and patient comfort.
