The EV71 vaccine developed by the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) of Taiwan is a monovalent, formalin-inactivated whole-virus vaccine candidate produced using Vero cell culture technology. Formulated with an aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) adjuvant, it is designed to prevent Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection, a primary cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) that can lead to severe neurological complications. Phase I clinical trials demonstrated that the vaccine is safe and immunogenic, eliciting cross-neutralizing antibodies against multiple EV71 subgenotypes, including B1, B4, B5, and C4A. The technology was developed by the Vaccine Research & Development Center at NHRI and has served as the basis for further clinical development by commercial partners in Taiwan.
