Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exalgo is an extended-release formulation of hydromorphone hydrochloride, a potent semi-synthetic opioid analgesic. It utilizes the OROS (Osmotic Release Oral System) technology to provide a controlled, steady release of the drug over a 24-hour period, minimizing the peak-to-trough fluctuations associated with immediate-release formulations. Developed by Mallinckrodt (following acquisition from Neuromed Pharmaceuticals), Exalgo is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain in opioid-tolerant patients requiring continuous, around-the-clock opioid analgesia for an extended period. Its primary mechanism of action involves agonism of the mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, which modulates the perception of and emotional response to pain.
