Overview

Exenatide + liraglutide is a combination of two glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, each approved individually for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and, in some cases, obesity. Both drugs mimic the action of endogenous GLP-1 by binding to and activating the GLP-1 receptor. This results in increased glucose-dependent insulin secretion, decreased glucagon secretion, delayed gastric emptying, and reduced appetite. Exenatide is a synthetic version of exendin-4 derived from Gila monster saliva with resistance to DPP-4 degradation; it is administered as either twice-daily or once-weekly injections. Liraglutide is a modified human GLP-1 analog with prolonged activity due to albumin binding; it is administered once daily. Both agents are used as adjuncts to diet and exercise for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes and have demonstrated weight loss benefits[1][7][8]. There are no known marketed products or clinical guidelines recommending their combined use as a fixed-dose combination.
