Exendin (9-39) is a 31-amino acid peptide that acts as a potent and selective competitive antagonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor. It is a truncated version of exendin-4, originally isolated from the venom of the Gila monster (*Heloderma suspectum*). In clinical research, specifically in studies conducted by University Hospital Basel, exendin (9-39) is utilized as a pharmacological probe to investigate the physiological role of endogenous GLP-1 in appetite regulation and glucose metabolism. The combination with intraduodenal (ID) nutrient infusion allows researchers to stimulate the natural release of GLP-1 from the gut and subsequently block its effects to measure its contribution to satiety and gastric emptying. This experimental paradigm is primarily used in Phase 1 physiological studies to understand the mechanisms of obesity and eating behavior.
