Extracellular vesicles derived from Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSC-EV) are nano- to micro-sized vesicles secreted by mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the Wharton’s jelly of human umbilical cords. WJ-MSC-EVs include exosomes and microvesicles and are key effectors of the MSC secretome, responsible for much of the therapeutic paracrine activity seen with these stem cells. WJ-MSC-EVs contain bioactive molecules such as cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and regulatory RNAs, providing anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-fibrotic, pro-regenerative, and tissue-protective activities. Mechanistically, these extracellular vesicles modulate immune cell polarization (notably inducing M2-like/anti-inflammatory macrophages), suppress pro-inflammatory responses, and influence tissue and organ repair and regeneration. They have shown therapeutic potential in preclinical and early clinical studies for liver fibrosis, myocardial infarction, joint repair, neurological disease, and anti-tumor effects, among others[1][4][7][10].
