Overview

Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational microbial therapy being evaluated by the University Hospital of North Norway for its potential to treat Alzheimer's disease. The procedure involves the administration of a preprocessed, thawed donor fecal suspension into the patient's colon via colonoscopy. This approach targets the gut-brain axis, aiming to restore a healthy microbial balance and mitigate the neuroinflammatory processes linked to the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Currently, it is being assessed in a Phase 1 clinical trial to determine its safety and feasibility in patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.
