Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Faropenem + clavulanate (also known as faropenem/clavulanate) is an oral antibacterial combination drug that pairs faropenem, a penem-class beta-lactam antibiotic, with clavulanate (clavulanic acid), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Faropenem works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Clavulanate acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading faropenem and thereby restoring and extending its antibacterial spectrum against resistant, beta-lactamase-producing pathogens. This combination is approved and marketed in India for treating various moderate-to-severe bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gynecological infections, and dental infections.
