Overview

Favipiravir + azithromycin is a combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily in the context of antiviral and antibacterial therapy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Favipiravir is an oral antiviral agent that selectively inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP), thereby blocking viral replication. It has broad-spectrum activity against single-stranded RNA viruses, including coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit; it also exhibits immunomodulatory effects and has been investigated for potential benefits in viral infections due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The combination was explored for synergistic effects in treating COVID-19, but both agents carry risks—most notably QT interval prolongation when used together or with other QT-prolonging drugs[3]. This combination does not have a unique brand name or specific regulatory approval as a fixed-dose product.
