Overview
Gut Microbial Transplantation (GMT), more commonly known as Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), is an investigational biologic therapy being developed by Spectrum Health Hospitals (now Corewell Health) for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis. [1] The therapy involves the infusion of complete fecal microbiota from a healthy donor into the patient's intestine. [5, 6] The primary mechanism is the restoration of a healthy gut microbiome, which is thought to be imbalanced or 'dysbiotic' in patients with IBD, thereby reducing inflammation. [4, 6, 7] The FDA regulates FMT as both a drug and a biologic. A phase I pilot study conducted at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in pediatric patients with IBD colitis found that 78% of subjects achieved a clinical response within one week. No serious adverse events were noted in the trial.
