This investigational fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) therapy is being developed by the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in patients with cirrhosis. The therapy consists of processed fecal matter from healthy donors, enriched with beneficial bacteria from the Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae families. It aims to modulate the gut-brain axis by "resetting" the dysbiotic gut microbiome, thereby reducing alcohol cravings and consumption. Clinical studies led by Dr. Jasmohan Bajaj have demonstrated that a single FMT enema can increase microbial diversity, boost short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, and reduce AUD-related adverse events and cravings over a six-month period.
