Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a live biotherapeutic product being investigated by the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. It involves the transfer of fecal microorganisms from a healthy donor to a patient to restore a healthy gut microbiota. The proposed mechanism of action is the modulation of the recipient's mucosal immunity in response to the new intestinal microbiota. In a phase 2 clinical trial known as the FACTU study, FMT was administered as an enema and compared to mesalazine enema for its ability to induce remission in patients with active left-sided ulcerative colitis.
