Fecal microbiota transplant is an investigational biologic therapy being studied by McMaster Children's Hospital for the treatment of pediatric small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). [1-3] The therapy consists of a complex mixture of live microorganisms derived from the stool of healthy pediatric donors, which is processed and prepared at McMaster Children's Hospital's local pediatric stool bank. [3-1] It is being evaluated in a Phase 1 pilot feasibility study (NCT05967871), which aims to assess its safety and efficacy in children aged 3 to 18 with SIBO. [11] The treatment is administered as an infusion directly into the gastrointestinal tract, either via a patient's existing enteral feeding tube or through an upper endoscopy into the duodenum. [2-2] The primary goal is to restore a healthy gut microbiome, correcting the dysbiosis associated with SIBO to alleviate symptoms. [3-4] The trial specifically targets patients at high risk for SIBO, including those with short bowel syndrome. [3-13]
