Overview

Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an experimental biologic therapy being evaluated by investigators at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, for the treatment of steroid-refractory gastrointestinal acute graft-versus-host disease (GI-aGVHD). The treatment is administered as capsules containing live microorganisms (fecal microbiota) derived from healthy donors. The therapeutic goal is to restore gut microbial diversity in patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and developed GI-aGVHD. The mechanism involves modulating the patient's gut microbiome to reduce dysbiosis and repopulate beneficial commensal bacteria, such as butyrate-producing species, which are believed to have an immunomodulatory effect that can alleviate the pathogenesis of GVHD.
