Fecal microbiota transplant is a live biotherapeutic product that was investigated by Seattle Children's Hospital for the treatment of pediatric Crohn's disease. The therapy involves the transfer of fecal matter from a healthy, screened donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient, which in this specific trial was done via a nasogastric tube. [4, 6] The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of a healthy gut microbiome, which is believed to correct dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria) often seen in Crohn's disease. [1, 3] By introducing a diverse and balanced microbial community, fecal microbiota transplant aims to reduce inflammation, modulate the patient's immune response, and improve clinical symptoms. [3] A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT02272868) was conducted to evaluate its efficacy and safety in patients aged 12 to 21 with active Crohn's disease. [4]
