Overview

Fecal microbiota transplant is an investigational biologic therapy being evaluated by Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center for the treatment of alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. [3, 7, 8] It is administered in capsule form and contains fecal microbiota collected from healthy donors. [3] The therapy aims to modulate the patient's immune system by restoring a healthy gut microbiome, as alopecia areata is understood to be driven by T-lymphocyte cells releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines around hair follicles. [2, 3] A randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT04833179) sponsored by the medical center is designed to assess whether this intervention can influence disease severity and promote hair growth.
