Overview

Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational biologic intervention being evaluated by The Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy consists of fecal microbiota sourced from healthy donors, which is administered via transendoscopic enteral tubing. The primary mechanism of action is the modulation and reconstruction of the patient's intestinal micro-ecology. By altering the gut microbiome, the treatment aims to modulate the host's immune system to reduce the autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells that characterizes type 1 diabetes. A clinical study (NCT04124211) is underway to assess this approach and investigate the underlying mechanisms using metagenomic and 16s rRNA sequencing technologies.
