Overview

Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational biologic therapy being studied by the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT03998423). [3, 4] The intervention consists of oral capsules containing processed fecal matter from healthy donors. The primary biological target is the gut microbiome. The proposed mechanism of action involves modifying the composition of the gut microbiota to positively influence the microbiota-gut-brain axis. [3, 4] This modulation is hypothesized to reduce neuroinflammation, decrease the deposition of amyloid-β protein, and regulate tau hyperphosphorylation, thereby treating the cognitive deficits and underlying pathological features of Alzheimer's disease. [7, 8, 11]
