Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational biologic therapy being studied by Children's Hospital Los Angeles for the treatment of pediatric ulcerative colitis. The treatment consists of fecal microbiota sourced from healthy donors, which contains diverse microbial communities intended to correct the gut dysbiosis associated with inflammatory bowel disease. In a Phase 1 clinical trial led by Dr. Sonia Michail, the therapy was administered as a rectal enema to children with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. The mechanism of action is the modulation and restoration of the gut microbiome, which is considered a key factor in the pathogenesis of the disease. Research from the trial has demonstrated that FMT can lead to sustained increases in gut microbial diversity in these patients. [7] While FMT is approved for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, its application in ulcerative colitis is still experimental.
