Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a live biotherapeutic product being investigated by the Air Force Military Medical University (also known as Fourth Military Medical University) in China for the treatment of refractory IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The intervention consists of live intestinal microbiota from healthy donors, administered to patients via methods such as transendoscopic enteral tubing (TET), retention enema, or enteric microbial capsules. [12, 15, 16] The therapeutic goal is to restore gut microecological balance and modulate the gut-kidney axis, as gut dysbiosis is believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of IgAN. [14, 16] A prospective cohort study (NCT03633864) and early case reports have shown that FMT can reduce 24-hour urinary protein levels and increase serum albumin while being generally well-tolerated. [12, 14, 16]
