Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational biologic therapy being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with associated gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. The therapy involves the administration of fecal matter from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of the recipient, with the goal of modifying the gut microbiome. This approach is based on the theory that dysbiosis, or an imbalance in gut bacteria, may contribute to both GI and behavioral symptoms in individuals with ASD through the gut-brain axis. The trial, led by Dr. Sonia Michail, specifically evaluates the safety and efficacy of a single dose of FMT delivered via upper endoscopy to the jejunum in children and young adults aged 5 to 17.
