Overview

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is a microbial therapy developed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for the treatment of moderate to severe *Clostridioides difficile* infection (CDI). The procedure involves the infusion of a processed suspension of fecal matter from a screened, healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient. This intervention aims to restore the diversity and functional stability of the recipient's gut microbiome, which provides colonization resistance against *C. difficile* through nutrient competition, restoration of bile acid metabolism, and production of antimicrobial substances. It is investigated as a first-line therapy for severe CDI and as a treatment for recurrent or refractory cases where standard antibiotic regimens, such as vancomycin, have failed.
