Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a live biotherapeutic product therapy being investigated by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in India for the treatment of alcohol use disorder in patients with cirrhosis. [3] This therapy involves transferring processed stool from a healthy donor into a patient's gastrointestinal tract to restore a healthy gut microbiome. [6] In a randomized controlled trial, ILBS is assessing the efficacy of FMT in maintaining alcohol abstinence, as well as reducing lapses and relapses. [3] The underlying hypothesis is that modulating the gut microbiome can correct dysbiosis associated with alcohol use, thereby reducing alcohol craving and the progression of alcoholic liver disease. [3, 6]
