Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational therapy being evaluated by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in a pilot study for the treatment of diarrhea related to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy. This form of microbiome therapy involves the transfer of a liquid preparation of stool from a healthy, screened donor into the recipient's intestine during a colonoscopy. The underlying principle is that the introduction of a healthy and diverse community of gut bacteria will restore the recipient's gut microbiome, which has been disrupted by ICI treatment, thereby alleviating diarrhea.
