Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) as developed and studied at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne is an investigational microbial therapy for active Crohn's disease. The protocol involves a 'clearing' phase using a two-week course of oral antibiotics (typically metronidazole and ciprofloxacin) and dietary modifications to prepare the gut environment. This is followed by the administration of a diverse consortium of live bacteria from healthy donor stool, initially delivered via colonoscopy and subsequently through weekly rectal enemas for a maintenance period.
