Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a microbial therapy involving the transfer of stool from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient. This specific FMT protocol, developed by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL), utilizes a Fecal Donor-Unrelated Donor Mix (FURM). The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of a diverse and functional gut microbiome, which provides colonization resistance against *Clostridium difficile*. By reintroducing a complex community of beneficial bacteria, FMT outcompetes *C. difficile* for nutrients and niches, and restores bile acid metabolism to inhibit the pathogen's germination and growth. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of initial and recurrent *Clostridium difficile* infections.
