Overview

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is a microbiome-based therapeutic approach being developed by the University Hospital, Clermont-Ferrand, specifically for the prevention of Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD) in adult patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The treatment involves the administration of a suspension containing 50g of processed donor stools via enema. The mechanism of action centers on the restoration of intestinal microbial diversity, which is typically depleted by pre-transplant conditioning and antibiotic use. By re-establishing a healthy microbiome, FMT aims to modulate the recipient's immune response, reduce systemic inflammation, and prevent the donor T-cell-mediated attack on host tissues that characterizes GvHD. This Phase II study evaluates FMT efficacy when administered shortly after neutrophil recovery.
