Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational microbial therapy being evaluated by the University of Minnesota for the treatment of pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The procedure involves the transfer of distal gut microbial communities from healthy, lean donors into the gastrointestinal tract of pre-diabetic recipients, typically administered via colonoscopy. The therapeutic rationale is based on the "bioremediation" of a dysbiotic gut microbiome to improve host metabolism, specifically insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis. In clinical trials, FMT is often evaluated alongside antibiotic conditioning regimens (using agents such as vancomycin, neomycin, or clindamycin) designed to deplete the recipient's existing microbiota and facilitate the successful engraftment of donor-derived beneficial bacteria.
